MEDIUM VOLTAGE AIR AND VACUUM SWITCHGEAR
2400, 4160, 7200, 13800 VOLTS
GENERAL ELECTRIC
In the 1940’s and early ‘50s, GENERAL ELECTRIC manufactured its first line of medium voltage circuit breakers and associated switchgear. The models produced were the:
- AM 10 10
- AM 10 15
- AM 10 25
- AM 5 50 600 and 1200 amp, 4160 volt
- AM 5 150 600 and 1200 amp, 4160 volt
- AM 5 250 1200 and 2000 amp, 4160 volt
- AM 7.5 250 1200 and 2000 amp, 4160 volt
- AM 7.5 500 1200 and 2000 amp, 7200 volt
- AM 15 250 1200 and 2000 amp, 7200 volt
- AM 15 500 1200 and 2000 amp, 14400 volt
These circuit breakers and switchgear were developed utilizing the vertical lift design. The breakers had primary drawout stabs, while the switchgear contained stationary drawout clusters in porcelain cylinders. The first switchgear required the operator to vertically lift the circuit breakers in place by means of a ratcheting tool. Subsequent to this, a large motor assembly was mounted in the rear of the switchgear cubicles to provide lifting energy for the circuit breakers,
In the mid 1950's GENERAL ELECTRIC followed its original designs with a series of breakers also called the AM series. This series was characterized initially by the continued use of a vertical lift mechanism, and a open door drawout design. General Electric changed the rear mounted lifting motor to a front mounted reversible drill motor. Eventually the motor assembly became portable with only one motor supplied for a switchgear lineup.
The switchgear was available in an indoor lineup, outdoor non walk-in lineup and outdoor walk-in single and double aisle,
The circuit breakers of this series were designated:
- AM 4.16 50
- AM 4.16 75
- AM 4.16 150
- AM 4.16 250
- AM 4.16 350
- AM 7.2 250
- AM 7.2 500
- AM 13.8 150
- AM 13.8 250
- AM 13.8 500
- AM 13.8 750
- AM 13.8 1000
